Advanced Fiber Studio (Highlights)
My current practice considers identity within conflicted spaces: identity pertaining to me, pertaining to materials, pertaining to making. Investigating materials, I assign roles to individual parts and force them to function together. Forcing by means of sewing, taping, unifying with pigment, and lathering with paper pulp, I challenge the materials I use by imposing my own vocabulary.
Mimicking bodily arrangements such as leaning, laying, or hanging, I create material systems that are actively, or lazily, fighting each other within. While imposing conflict materially, I seek elements of balance within form (ie. color, texture, pattern) to ground the identity of each work. Sewn fabrics, wrapped pipes, pulp-enveloped cardboard are all materials wearing disguises to hide inadequacy. Wimpy yet seemingly strong, solid but unable to stand, fluid without motion; I seek to create a place of material rivalry within a balanced composition.
