The theory of prospect and refuge seeks to describe why certain environments feel secure and thereby meet basic human psychological needs. A study in the 1960s determining when memories are formed in humans concluded that as children, memories in nature are formed and are carried by sensory perception into adulthood.
The use of landscape imagery has the ability to touch on prior recollections from childhood that activate the body, senses and awareness to have the ability to accompany the experience of memory. Through layers of nature translated to layers of fabric, I strive to form the memories in structurally stitched cloth, from the perspective of an adult, reflecting back onto memories that take place in childhood.
