Advanced Fiber Studio (Highlights)
Being uncomfortable in one’s own skin is an unavoidable passage from childhood to adulthood. But sometimes these experiences become engraved in our identity, and the remnants of discomfort become part of our daily lives. My works derive from personal trauma and endeavors that ended in failure. Playing on the notion of “what could have been” I pay homage to these failures to recognize and test the potential of a story that was never told. I work in various media including performance, glass, wood, fabric, and found materials. My process is to decompose the medium, making it a mere shell of what it once was; it reflects the fraction of what reality has done to us all. Through the discontent of my own shortcomings I reiterate these failures through stories that reference gender ambiguity, racial hierarchy, self-dissatisfaction, and the remnants of childhood that lie within the core of one’s identity.
