Advanced Fiber Studio (Highlights)
The piece that I am showing holds intense content and importance to me. I have been creating work the past three years about mixed race identity. My main reason to create work dealing with the identity of mixed raced people is because I feel it is a world unknown to most, that needs to be revealed. The emotions and feelings of people who are bi or multi-racial need to come into the art/gallery space and the social space. My hope is that through selecting snippets of conversation amongst a group of mixed raced individuals, it will provide insight into the feelings of alienation and the concerns of the mixed raced community. It is the lack of conversation that makes me want to create work about this community and to show people what that conversation is. Using common object in social situations, such as napkins as a canvas for the text I display the conversation in different contexts, at the dinner table, children's birthday party, cocktail party, bar. In all these social spaces the conversation continues and the napkin travels in each space. The series I am making of napkins attempt to display and include the viewer in these conversations in the art space and the social space.
