Tangible Negotiations
Rubber, paper instructions
Depends on installation, each rubber cube is 7” x 7” x 7”
2019

Open rubber cubes perform, contradict, and reimagine power structures, adapting the grid that early modernist architects and artists envisioned to restructure built and social space. While their gridded-ness depicts structural integrity, their translucence nods to weakness, revealing intrinsic floppiness. The cubes generate order in their placement, while the material properties of rubber subvert their rigidity and undermine authority. Alongside these objects are instructional cards that invite audience participation. Through a combination of symbols and open ended prompts, these cards request physical experimentation. The audience is asked to negotiate, destabilize, and play with the cubes as potential building blocks.
