Olivia Comai loves to lie because she can. She wants her work to make you feel the same way you felt when you called the teacher mom on accident. Dry humor acts as a buffer between personal narrative and the ability to be relatable to an audience. Comai swaddles you up in the seductiveness of humor to make obscure concepts digestible. Her multifaceted, one-woman productions combine puppetry, drawing, and live performance to give the viewer a peek into her big ol’ brain, a lonely space full of fur and fleece. But this could be anyone’s brain, because her work pulls from childhood memory and a collective pop-consciousness. She plays with the uncanny and promotes her own off-brand brand by slipping in a hint of glimmer, glitz, glam, and goop.
